Ingredients
Layered Mediterranean dip with hummus is full of all of my favorite Greek flavors including hummus, kalamata olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese.
- Cream cheese – Let the cream cheese warm up at room temperature for an hour for easy creaming.
- Feta cheese – I’m a big fan of feta cheese. It’s creamy, tangy, and salty. Get the block of feta cheese and crumble it yourself instead of using feta crumbles. Block feta is vacuum-packed in a salty brine that helps maintain its creamy texture and tangy flavor. While it’s convenient to use pre-crumbled feta cheese, the flavor of block feta can’t be beaten.
- Italian seasoning – Gives the creamy cheese layer a great Greek flavor.
- Hummus – A layered Mediterranean dip demands creamy hummus. Whether you use your favorite store-bought hummus or make homemade hummus, just be sure its creamy and full of flavor.
- Tomatoes – I like the ease of small tomatoes like grape or cherry tomatoes. Other types of tomatoes work equally as well. Paste tomatoes, like Red Plum or Roma tomatoes, are ideal with fewer seeds and thick flesh. If you use a slicing tomato, be sure to remove the seeds so your dip doesn’t have a watery layer of tomatoes.
- Cucumbers – I love English cucumber for their small seed cavity and delicious flavor that’s rarely bitter. You’ll find them wrapped in plastic to protect their delicate skin. If you use a slicing cucumber, be sure to scrape out the seed cavity to remove the extra moisture.
- Olives – Kalamata olives are my go-to choice for this tasty Greek layer dip. Their salty flavor balances the fresh veggies. However, black olives are a great choice because they’re easy to find. Not a fan of olives? Try Castelvetrano olives. They have a mild, buttery flavor.
- Onion – Use green onions for a subtle onion flavor. However, you can use whatever type of onion you have. Red onion has an intense flavor and makes for a stunning visual contrast. Whereas, sweet onions, like a Vidalia onion, are mild and delicious raw.
- Lemon – A squeeze of fresh lemon juice brightens the Greek hummus dip.
How To Make Mediterranean Layer Dip
Cream feta cheese, cream cheese, lemon juice, and Italian seasoning in a large bowl with a hand mixer on low, gradually increasing to medium until the cheeses are fully combined and creamy. You can mix by hand and use a wooden spoon, but I find that a hand mixer gets the cheeses a smoother texture.
Spoon the cream cheese mixture into the serving dish.
Next, layer the hummus over the cream cheese. (I like to leave a bit of the cheese layer peeking out so people know it’s there.)
Top with onions, tomatoes, cucumber, olives, and crumbled feta.
Serve right away or cover and refrigerate up to 12 hours before serving.
Storage
If you have leftovers, cover the dish with a piece of plastic wrap or scoop them into an airtight container and refrigerate up to 3 days.
Tips
- Remove as much liquid from the olives and tomatoes before adding to the dip to avoid the dip turning into a gooey mess. Dry the olives in a paper towel and use the flesh of a slicing tomato, leaving the seedy middle behind.
- Use room-temperature cream cheese for easy creaming. Plan ahead and take the cream cheese out of the fridge one hour before you plan to mix the dip.
- Use a shallow dish like a pie plate, serving platter, or shallow baking dish to make serving a breeze.
FAQs
Just like traditional seven layer dip pairs perfectly with tortilla chips, you must use pitas to dip in this Mediterranean hummus dip. Toast fresh pita bread and cut it into wedges. Short on time? Make things easy and tear open a bag of crunchy pita chips from the grocery store.
The cream cheese layer provides great flavor, but also a stable base to layer the rest of the ingredients onto. Greek yogurt and sour cream are much softer, and won’t hold up as well and may make the dip a
Full-fat cream cheese will give your dip the best flavor.
For healthy swaps for cream cheese, consider Neufchâtel cheese. Cream cheese is made using cream, whereas Neufchâtel cheese begins with milk for a naturally lower-fat starting point, making it a great lower-fat option. Low-fat and fat-free cream cheese rely on gums and stabilizers to achieve that creamy texture without the fat.
Making the layered dip ahead of time is a great way time saver and allows the flavors to meld. Layer the dip with the fresh veggies, cover with a piece of plastic wrap, and refrigerate for a few hours before serving. Another option is to prep the ingredients separately ahead of time and assemble right before you plan to serve it. This is a great option if you’re traveling with the dip.
