What’s the Difference Between Regular Butter and Compound Butter?

I have been on a journey with butter through all the years. First, there were regular sticks of butter which I enjoyed for most of my life and felt quite content to do so. But then we discovered grass-fed butter. Holy moly, so much flavor! Where had this delicious butter been all of my childhood? I almost felt a little sad I didn’t discover it earlier. What can I say, butter is one of our favorite things around here.

And now we find ourselves at the point of enjoying compound butter. So simple. So delicious. It’s a beautiful way to add flavor to any food. At each discovery, our expectations of what butter could be increased, making it difficult to go back.

Compound means to be composed of two or more elements, a mixture. The beautiful thing about compound butter is that the possibilities are endless! By adding different things to whipped butter, you can make so many fun combinations.

In this case, we add flavor from the cinnamon and honey and turn salted butter into something slightly sweet and spectacular.

Instructions to Make Whipped Cinnamon Honey Butter

This is a super easy recipe. Begin by adding softened butter to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Or you can use a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer or a food processor to blend all the ingredients.

Add the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and beat, beginning on low and gradually increasing the speed to keep the powdered sugar from going all over. Beat on high until the butter is smooth.

You may need to pause the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Continue mixing until the butter has become light and fluffy.

a jar and spreader full of whipped honey butter.

Variations

  • Butter –  You can substitute unsalted butter for the salted butter if you want more control over the level of saltiness. I find that the salt in salted grass-fed butter balances out the sweetness well. Salted butter will also help to preserve the butter compound.
  • Sweetness – Adding a little powdered sugar improves the texture of the cinnamon honey butter. If you find that adding both the powdered sugar and honey are too sweet, cut back on the amount of honey first. You can add less sugar, but it will affect the texture of the butter.
  • Vegan – To make vegan, use vegan butter instead of real butter and substitute maple syrup for the honey. The maple syrup will give a subtle maple flavor to your butter compound.
