Hot summer days are perfect for al fresco dining. Up here in the north, our summer season is so short we try to enjoy as much of it as we can. Grilling pizzas is a favorite around here giving everyone a chance to make their favorite kind of pizza. We have some pepperoni pizza fans in our home but once I started making these summer peach pizzas, it became our go-to pizza.

Now you might be thinking that adding peaches to a pizza is a bit out of your comfort zone. Don’t worry, my family was a bit skeptical the first time I made it too, but have since come to ask for it.

Ingredients for Italian Sausage and Peach Pizza

  • Pizza dough – Use your favorite fresh pizza dough. Store-bought or homemade will work for this recipe! I always use my sourdough pizza crust, but sometimes I just grab a few bags of pizza dough at Trader Joe.
  • Peach jam – The sweetness in the jam balances out the savory Italian sausage and salty cheese.
  • Peaches – Fresh peaches shine in this pizza and is an absolute must!
  • Italian sausage – Italian sausages come with various levels of heat. I usually choose hot Italian sausage because we love the punch of flavor and heat, but opt for mild if you’re not a fan of heat.
  • Onion – Use yellow, white, or red onion. All of them will work with this pizza.
  • Fresh herbs – I love to use fresh oregano from the garden but fresh basil would be delicious too.
  • Cheese – I usually use mozzarella cheese for our homemade pizzas because I just love the stretch factor.

Italian sausage and Peach Pizza Instructions

Prep

Preheat the pizza stone to 500 degrees or the highest temperature setting for your oven.

My sourdough pizza crust makes enough for 4 8″ pizzas. Divide the dough into 4 pieces. You can make multiple individual crusts or one large crust. Prepare the pizza dough on a piece of parchment paper dusted with flour or cornmeal.

Brown the ground Italian sausage in a large skillet and then transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate to cool.

Cut the onion and the peaches into thin slices.

Assembly

Spoon a few tablespoons of peach jam onto the pizza dough and spread it all around, leaving 1/2-1 inch to the edge of the crust.

Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the jam.

Top with ground sausage, sliced onion, and then peach slices.

Baking

Slide the parchment paper onto a pizza peel and into the oven on the pizza stone. Use a baking sheet or large cutting board if you don’t own a pizza peel. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the cheese has melted. The exact baking time will depend on how thick your pizza is. We stretch our dough so it has a thin crust. The underside of your pizza will be golden brown when it’s done.

Slide the pizza peel or baking sheet under the parchment paper and remove from the oven when it’s done baking.

Cut the pizza with a pizza cutter or a large sharp knife and enjoy!

Substitutions

The beauty of pizza is that you can make it your own, swapping out ingredients you don’t enjoy or adding additional toppings you love. Here are some good options to consider for variety.

shredded mozzarella cheese with a box grater
  • Use fresh mozzarella balls, brie, burrata cheese, ricotta, or goat cheese in place of shredded mozzarella cheese.
  • Nectarines and peaches are so similar that you can interchange them without affecting the overall flavor of the pizza.
  • I love the punch of flavor and ease of raw onions. However, you can use caramelized onion for a sweet, more subtle onion flavor.
  • Top with peppery arugula instead of fresh herbs.
  • Drizzle a tablespoon of olive oil or a splash of balsamic vinegar over the top of the pizza when it’s done baking.
