Why Make Homemade Coffee Creamer?

You guys know how much I value making food from scratch with ingredients that come as close to how God intended them, so the extra work to make things myself feels worthwhile. This recipe is unique because making your own creamer hardly takes any additional effort. You end up with a homemade, high-quality creamer with ingredients you can trust in minutes.

  • Additives – While store-bought coffee creamers like Coffee Mate are convenient, they also come with a list of questionable ingredients.
  • Quality – In addition, when you make your coffee creamer at home, you have full control over the quality of ingredients. If you value organic, milk from a grass-fed cow, or raw milk for your family, then this allows you to have those.
  • Sweetness – Homemade coffee creamers are not overly sweet like a store-bought version tends to be. When you make it yourself, you can adjust how much maple syrup you add to find your perfect balance.
  • Customizable – A great base to customize a homemade coffee creamer anyway you want to. Use different flavorings, milks or omit the sweetener to make a keto friendly coffee creamer.

Ingredients

  • Heavy Cream and Whole Milk – Using heavy cream add whole milk in your homemade creamer will give you that creamy, rich flavor similar to creamers like Coffee-Mate. Since half and half is basically equal parts heavy cream and whole milk, using heavy cream and whole milk allows you to customize how creamy your creamer is. If half and half is perfect for you, then just substitute half and half for the same amount as whole milk and heavy cream combined. Adjust the ratios if you want your creamer to be thinner or thicker.
  • Maple Syrup – A great sustainable resource for our homestead that has the added bonus of being filled with minerals and vitamins.  Feel free to substitute sugar or honey if you prefer, but you will need to add an additional step of heating the milks to dissolve the sugar or honey, and then allow to cool before placing into the refrigerator. The honey will add flavor and sweetness your creamer, whereas the sugar will only add sweetness.
  • Almond Extract and Vanilla Extract – This is optional but I highly suggest trying it as it adds a nice layer of flavor to your morning coffee. My favorite flavor combination uses almond extract with my homemade vanilla extract for a taste similar to Italian sweet cream, but feel free to experiment with different extracts to find your favorite.

Add the heavy cream, whole milk, maple syrup, and extracts to a quart size mason jar. Place the lid and close tightly and shake well to combine.

Label your mason jar with the best by date of the milks.

I like to use a pourable lid to make it easy to pour into your coffee.

Keep the coffee creamer in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use it within the best-by date on your heavy cream and milk. Shake before serving.

FAQs

Can You Freeze Homemade Coffee Creamer?

Freezing your homemade coffee creamer is a great option if you find that you aren’t going through the creamer fast enough before the best by date. I like to keep a few cubes in the freezer for when company stops by and need a only a few servings of coffee creamer.

Freeze your coffee creamer in individual servings by pouring the coffee creamer into an ice cube tray or silicone mold. Place into the freezer for a few hours until solid and then pop out the cubes of frozen coffee creamer and place into a plastic freezer bag, squeezing to remove as much air as possible. Once thaw, use within two days.

Can I Substitute a Different Milk?

Swap out the heavy cream and whole milk with unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk for a non-dairy coffee creamer alternative. Coconut milk will lend a light coconut flavor but is rich in good fats for a creamy feel. Oat milk is also very creamy and my favorite milk alternative.

Can I Change the Flavor?

Use the coffee creamer as a base and add different flavorings to customize the flavor. Add cinnamon, chocolate syrup, and other flavored syrups, or different extracts like mint, hazelnut, coconut, or caramel. Some of these flavors are natural companions, like chocolate and mint, chocolate and hazelnut, coconut with chocolate and almond and the list goes on. Have fun and experiment!

Is it Cheaper to Make Homemade Coffee Creamer?

Making homemade coffee creamer is cheaper if you’re comparing products of similar quality. Once you start to elevate the quality of the ingredients, the price of making your coffee creamer will rise as well but you are now getting a different product.

Often you can make a high-quality product for a fraction of the cost of a similar store bought product since you’re not paying for the convenience of a ready-made product.
