Chewy, wholesome with just a touch of sweetness. This heavenly hunks copycat recipe is just like the ones we all love. With a taste and texture similar to oatmeal chocolate cookie dough, but all of the goodness of a homemade chocolate chip granola bar, these make the perfect snack.
After the first time making these, I knew these would become a household staple. My family agreed wholeheartedly!
What are Heavenly Hunks?
If you’ve never heard of Heavenly Hunks they are essentially no-bake small cookies made with oats, coconut, and chocolate held together with nut butter and sweetened with maple syrup. Made with organic, whole, nutrient-dense ingredients and plenty of healthy fats, this is a snack I can feel good about feeding my family. I usually buy these at Costco, but have also seen them at Target, your local Home goods Store, Amazon, and Walmart.
Sometimes the mood strikes for a sweet treat and you don’t want to run to the store. Thankfully these take such little effort to make, I find making them is easier than driving to the grocery store.
While vanilla extract isn’t on the ingredient list in the original heavenly hunks, adding this flavor just makes sense when I think of cookie dough. Feel free to leave it out if you’d like.
Why I Love This Heavenly Hunks Recipe
- These are the real deal, tasting so much like the original recipe. Using all pantry staples and coming together in minutes, I can make these anytime. The small bite-size portions are perfect for a yummy treat after dinner or for an afternoon treat.
- Using gluten-free oats makes these homemade heavenly hunks an easy gluten-free treat or use vegan chocolate chips for a vegan option. To make safe for anyone with a nut allergy, substitute sun butter in place of the almond butter.
- This is such a high-quality snack, even though it tastes like a dessert, but made with less sugar. Each time you opt to make a better choice for your family, it matters! I used to wonder if the extra effort made a difference. I can buy snacks so easily, but I tell you what, I have learned so much by making small, intentional effort to feed my family. And each little effort compounds over all the years, like making small deposits into a bank account. So keep persevering and serving your family. it’s worth it!
Heavenly Hunk Ingredients
- Old-fashioned oats
- Oat flour (ground up oatmeal)
- Sweetened shredded coconut flakes
- Almond flour
- Coconut oil
- Maple syrup
- Brown sugar (optional)
- Vanilla extract (optional)
- Almond butter
- Dark chocolate chips
Heavenly Hunks Directions
Mix Heavenly Hunks Dry Ingredients
To make oat flour, place 2 cups of oats into a food processor, grind until it’s a fine powder, and add to a large bowl.
Next, add 1 cup of old-fashioned oats and 2/3 cup of shredded coconut into the food processor and pulse 3-5 times.
Add the oatmeal, coconut, and almond flour to the large mixing bowl with the oat flour.
Mix Heavenly Hunks Wet Ingredients
Add ½ cup of coconut oil, ½ cup of almond butter, 1 tsp of vanilla extract, and ½ cup of maple syrup to a pan on the stove over medium heat. Stir to incorporate the ingredients and until the coconut oil is completely melted.
Pour the wet ingredients over the oat mixture in the bowl, stirring to combine well. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature before adding chocolate.
While the oat mixture is cooling prep an 8X8 pan by lining it with a piece of parchment paper.
Chop 1 cup chocolate chips until the desired size. I chop mine until roughly half the size. Fold the chocolate into the oat mixture.
Next, pour the oat mixture into the pan. Press the heavenly hunks into the pan, paying special attention to the corners. Compacting the mixture will help the bars to hold their shape when cut.
Place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. When the bars are firm, use the parchment paper to lift the bars onto a cutting board and cut them into bite-size pieces with a sharp knife.
Tips/Substitutions for Heavenly Hunks
- Toast the oats if you want a nuttier taste. Place oats on an ungreased baking sheet and into a 350-degree oven. Toast for 8-12 minutes, stirring halfway, until lightly golden brown.
- Use peanut butter, sun butter, or cashew butter in place of almond butter. Cashew butter is a great option because of it’s mild flavor.
- Use other liquid sweeteners instead of maple syrup such as honey, brown rice syrup, corn syrup, or agave syrup. I prefer to use maple syrup simply because it’s an easy resource for us since we tap our maple trees.
- If you prefer additional sweetness you can add 2 tbsp of brown sugar, cane sugar, or coconut sugar to the pan when melting the coconut oil.
- If you decide to use something other than coconut oil, be sure that the fat that turns solid at room temperature, such as palm oil. The fat helps to hold the bars together and you won’t get the same results with a liquid oil.
- This oatmeal-based snacks is best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Store up to 2 weeks or freeze for 3 months, if they last that long!

This is the perfect recipe – I wouldn’t change a thing! These surpass the store bought Heavenly Hunks without question. It’s like the difference between store bought tomatoes and homegrown tomatoes.
I’m glad you enjoyed them. I love your comparison, it’s so true!
This recipe is perfect! We made it with our homemade maple syrup and cashew butter – my husband liked them better than the store bought version.
I love that you make your own maple syrup and cashew butter! So fun!
Can you substitute another ingredient for the coconut?
If you can’t have coconut, substitute additional oats for the coconut flakes and palm shortening for the coconut oil.
Can you reconcile the 2 cups of Oat flour listed in the ingredient list with the directions to make oat flour by taking 1 cup of oats and grinding them in the food processor? I did that, thinking perhaps it would increase in volume to two cups, but it did not. Thank you!
Dawn, thanks for catching that! I updated the recipe with the corrections.
Love heavenly hunks but wanting to make more things at home, so I was excited to find this recipe! I have a nut allergy though, is there a replacement for the almond flour? I’d think all-purpose but I don’t think it’s recommended to eat raw all-purpose flour.
You’re right, it’s not suggested to eat raw flour. Instead, I’d try replacing the almond flour with oat flour and see if that works. To make oat four, simply grind old-fashioned oats into a fine powder. I haven’t tried this substitution, so please report back what you discover if you try it!
