How To Make An Easy Pumpkin Flower Arrangement
Learn how to make an easy pumpkin flower arrangement to create stunning centerpieces in this step-by-step tutorial.
It’s the time of year when the temperature drops and the fall colors shine, signaling the beginning of my holiday hosting season. What better way to add a special touch to your gatherings than a DIY pumpkin floral arrangement? It’s a fun, creative idea to dress up your holiday table.
Thanksgiving is just days away and I knew I wanted to have a fall flower arrangement for our Thanksgiving table. Since we had a tremendous pumpkin harvest this fall, I knew it had to be a pumpkin arrangement.
Things to Consider Before Purchasing Flowers
Fresh or Faux?
Fresh flowers are amazing and my personal favorite. I will always gravitate towards using real flowers if given the choice. They are vibrant, often smell wonderful, and have amazing detail that’s difficult to replicate with faux flowers. They just can’t be beat in my opinion. But there are occasions when faux flowers are a better fit. Use faux flowers if you have any type of flower allergy or sensitivity to floral scents. Another consideration is the expense. While faux flowers come with an initial investment, since you can reuse them year after year, you ultimately save money in the long run.
Seasonal
Do you want your floral centerpiece to reflect the season? Your local grocery store will most likely have a floral department filled with a variety of flowers that include tried and true staples, as well as seasonal flowers.
Color Scheme
Using contrasting flowers in an arrangement, known as a complementary color scheme in floral design, creates a striking visual contrast. Alternatively, sticking to the tints, tones, and shades of one color will create a monochromatic color scheme. Muted, soft tones, like pale roses or white mums, will lend a delicate and elegant feel, while vibrant, striking colors will create an energetic and passionate mood.
If the idea of choosing the color scheme sounds daunting to you, then buy a large bouquet of flowers. A florist has already done the work of choosing blooms that complement one another, leaving you confident that the flowers will look nice together.
Texture
Flowers and greenery vary in texture and add dimension. This is why you can have a visually pleasing arrangement with just one or two colors, relying on shape and texture for interest.
Space
Be aware of the height of the pumpkin flower arrangement unless you plan to remove the centerpiece at mealtime. We’ve all been to dinner parties that have gorgeous centerpieces, but unfortunately, you can’t see past them to talk to the person across from you.
Also, know that the centerpiece will encroach on the table place setting space if you have a small table.
Purpose
How and where will you plan to display your pumpkin flower arrangement? In addition to displaying a fall tablescape for a special event, like at Thanksgiving dinner or a fall wedding, consider having a fresh flower arrangement on an entry table as a beautiful way to greet your guests. Not hosting? Don’t let that stop you from making this easy centerpiece. It’s a great hostess gift idea that any hostess would love to receive.
Supplies Needed
- Pumpkin – I suggest using a real pumpkin for your display. Real pumpkins come in unique shapes and sizes that will add character to your arrangement.
- Glass vase or Mason Jar – Use a glass vase or jar that matches the height of your pumpkin. Hiding the vase inside creates the look of a pumpkin vase for a beautiful centerpiece.
- Sharp Knife – A simple sharp knife will work to cut the top of the pumpkin.
- Pruning Shears – Makes trimming flower stems and greenery to the perfect height.
- Flowers – I love using real flowers. They light up all of the senses with their fragrance and texture. You just can’t beat the real thing.
The types of flowers i buy
- One or two types of flowers with the same hues that will be the focal point. The larger the arrangement, the more varieties I choose.
- A filler flower to help make the arrangement feel fuller. I look for a smaller flower in the same color family as the focal flower.
- Accent greenery. Look for interesting textures and shapes to bring variety. Since most greenery have stiff stems, they are a great choice to add height to your arrangement.
How To Create A Beautiful Pumpkin Flower Arrangement
Choose a beautiful pumpkin
When it comes to creating gorgeous pumpkin floral arrangements, the first step is choosing the ideal pumpkin for your display. Look for fresh pumpkins that are smooth, blemish-free, and have a sturdy stem. Match the size of the pumpkin with the scale of your arrangement, making sure that it doesn’t overwhelm the space. Pumpkins come in a variety of colors and sizes so don’t be afraid to think outside the box and find something unique.
Preparing the Pumpkin
Wash away any dirt or debris from the outside of the pumpkin.
Place the vase upside down on top of the pumpkin and trace its outline with a pencil or pen. Use a sharp knife to cut out the pumpkin top. Clean the inside of the pumpkin by scooping out the pumpkin seeds and pulp. Wipe the outside of the pumpkin with a damp cloth to remove any pumpkin pulp.
Place the vase inside of the pumpkin, filling the vase with a few inches of water.
Arranging the Flowers
To arrange the flowers, start by lining the outer edge of the pumpkin with baby’s breath. Baby’s breath is a beautiful, neutral choice that makes the base seem fuller. Add any flowers that will hang downward. This creates the base of the arrangement.
Next, add the focal flowers. Trim the flowers to a similar height and place them into the center of the arrangement.
Finally, add the greenery to fill in any gaps.
Experiment with different heights and angles to achieve a balanced arrangement, checking all angles. Once you are satisfied with the placement of the flowers, you can add finishing touches by incorporating elements for added flair and creativity.
Now you have the tools ready to create a lovely pumpkin centerpiece. Remember to choose the flowers with care, choose the perfect pumpkin, prepare the pumpkin properly, and arrange the flowers with care.
